Last night a DJ saved my life...
And that DJ was me XD
OK so that was an extremely arrogant way to start a post, but I really couldn't think of anything better to write - so deal with it :p
Last night I DJ'ed for a 21st / house warming party for one of the guys from the Supra Club. I carted my 2x massive speakers, my amplifier, my turntables, CDJ, mixer and 2 crates of records and 3 of my mates from Ashmore to Chermside, to play choons for a group of people I'd never met.
OK so there was about 15 - 20 of the regular Supra Club members, so it wasn't like I didn't know anyone. But it was interesting, being "the entertainment" for the night..... no pressure!
One thing the night taught me is probably a lesson I needed. Keeping a level balance between tracks you want to play, and what the crowd will react to. I was impressed, once we got on to the good tracks we kept the girls dancing for quite some time - which really made me feel good about what I was doing.
I do need to get my hands on a few more "floor filler" tracks. A lot of what I've got varies from the "angry house" and "step house" (as I dub the genres, totally wrong mind you) to typical "house", "breaks" and what I call "fluffy house" - which is laid back house with lyrics that makes you feel good about yourself, verging into the 'trance' genre.
I'm still torn between the CDJ vs Turntable thing. I have to admit I've got the hang of the CDJ now and am even starting to play with the loops and cues, but there's just something about handling vinyl that I still can't resist. It's a solid. It's real and you can spin it and flip it and it just feels right.
That being said, what the CDJ's can do these days you probably couldn't tell the difference between a mix done on vinyl or CD, except that my CD's have less "clicks" and "scratches" than my vinyl... heh
If I went full CDJ, I'd have to spend some time ripping all my vinyl to CD - but I do still like the feeling of flipping through a record crate looking for that next feeling, the next emotion I want to put down on the floor and test the reaction of those riding my ride.
Anyway, nuff of that, except to say that I'm really digging playing for people and will have to chase a few more opportunities for this in the future. The instant feedback is amazing and is really making me feel good!
Mate of mine just bought the "Party Cruise" boat. I did joke about him letting me DJ for him, though I would expect those crowds are more "general party" music - so I don't know if I'd get away with what I play, even if I do drop "Cant Touch This" into the middle of a full house set ;)
Last week was pretty fast paced and this week looks to be the same.
Tomorrow I have a meeting with my Japanese client. It must be a Japanese thing, because they want to come visit the "office" - which at first had me in a complete shock, since the office is a converted house. But after the shock subsided I realised so be it, I'll just do a quick tidy up in the morning before the meeting and show them what there is to show. Not a lot, a couple of desks, a server room and a 7 foot wide whiteboard with whatever my brain is currently mulling through.
I've decided to restructure the business - and have made Melina our Technical Coordinator. Her role will be working from the office, fielding the initial technical call and assigning the job to an engineer, following up clients on outstanding issues, organising maintenance schedules, keeping the support contracts in order.
My hope is that this will help improve the efficiency of the team and allow us to grow whilst I focus on building and promoting the business further.
Tuesday the Aristo goes in to get the bushes replaced and car raised an inch or two. Good timing too, with the load we had in it Saturday night we scraped going over every bump in the road. I was waiting for the wheels to fold over and the car to scrape along the road after we hit one bump!
Although I'm being really careful, I'm now back to walking every day - with every second day I'm able to jog for 15 - 20 minutes of the walk. Unfortunately if I jog every day the muscles in my right leg still ache so I've got to spread it out. On the weekend I try and jog for as long as possible before I start to feel a slight pain grow then slow down before I do any damage. So far I'm up to about 40 minutes of jogging on the weekend.
One thing I forgot to add - I've had a few people make comment about some of the stuff I've written. Most particularly is my post on "hopeless romantic" and how what I've defined it as is not the true definition.
GET OVER IT PEOPLE.
I don't give a rats, read the disclaimer at the bottom of the site. It's all a big freeken joke.
Anyway... on that note..
